In the years leading up to World War Two, trials were held for the pre-production versions of the Sturmgeschütz. Following these trials, it was concluded that they were to be supported by an armoured ammunition carrier and observation vehicle. This was the Sd Kfz 253.
The design was based on a Demag semi-tracked chassis and was initially introduced as an observation and command vehicle for the Sturmgeschütz brigades but it soon became widely used by other branches of the German artillery for observation duties.
